As September rolls around, Architectural Digest is back with its much-anticipated annual Style issue. This time, it spotlights Eva Chen, a popular figure on Instagram, as she opens up about the process of renovating her family’s new country home in Connecticut.
Though Eva has always been a city lover, she and her husband, Tom Bannister—a creative director in advertising—have embraced a more peaceful weekend routine since finding their dream getaway in the summer of 2020. Throughout the renovation, Eva kept her 1.7 million Instagram followers in the loop with regular updates.
She connected with the design firm Hendricks Churchill through Instagram messages and teamed up with designers Heide Hendricks and Rafe Churchill to transform the 2,800-square-foot house. The makeover involved knocking down walls, turning a garage into a bedroom, and upgrading the windows.
The finished home strikes a balance between warmth and elegance without feeling too formal. With help from the designers, Eva also created inviting play spaces and cozy corners for her children, Ren and Tao. The family recently grew with the arrival of their newest member, baby River.
Furnishings came from a mix of sources, including Plain English, ABC Carpet & Home, and Apparatus, along with unique antique finds from estate sales, private collections, Etsy, and 1stDibs.
